Homeopathy is a 200 year-old system of medicine which uses naturally occurring substances in minute doses to stimulate the body’s innate healing capacity. It is a safe and effective modality with the ability to treat a great variety of complaints – whether mental or physical, chronic or acute.
Homeopathy was founded by Samuel Hahnemann, a late 18th century German physician who was, at the time, exploring ways to remove toxicity from the medicines of his day. Through his efforts to reduce side effects of medicines, he discovered the basic principles of homeopathy. In this manner, Hahnemann developed a profound healing modality which continues to grow and expand to this day, and is used to an even greater degree in parts of Europe and India.
Hahnemann viewed disease as a pattern of disruption in the “vital force”, the underlying life energy of a person often equated to what is called chi in acupuncture. The role of the homeopath is to restore optimal health by studying the whole person and identifying the pattern of disruption in their vital force, and by then giving the homeopathic remedy that most corresponds to that particular pattern. A homeopathic remedy is chosen based on an individual’s unique symptom picture and constitution, not just based on the disease. As a result, a dozen patients with eczema could require a dozen different homeopathic medicines.
Some conditions that homeopathy can be useful for include, but are not limited to, asthma, anxiety, IBS, bronchitis, headaches, insomnia, depression, urinary tract infections, PMS, fatigue, low libido and musculoskeletal pain. It can also be helpful during life transitions or times of grief. Homeopathic medicines have very minimal side effects and are safe for everyone, including infants, pregnant women, and people on multiple pharmaceuticals.
